Boot Camp VIA Style

Forget the early morning starts and gruelling workouts, VIA's boot camp involves the APC board, Android and creative ideas.

In January 2013, registered participants in the VIA boot camp will turn up at VIA's headquarters in Taipei Taiwan for two days of one on one mentoring with experts from VIA on their APC board. Participants will be able to develop and prototype their designs and applications for the APC, even having access to a 3D printer while they're there. A couple of months later, in April 2013, the final results will be showcased at an event, also in Taipei.

The program kicks off at the VIA global headquarters in Xindian, New Taipei City over the weekend of January 19th and 20th, 2013. It will allow participants to form teams to take on the challenge of designing and building connected hardware devices using the APC platform. Industry experts will be on hand to assist and mentor teams as they work through their prototype builds. Participants will also have the opportunity to experiment with 3D printers for conceptualizing and prototyping.

Event Schedule: The APC Boot Camp will kick off the weekend of January 19th and 20th, 2013, followed by regular progress meet-ups and a final showcase event April 14th, 2013.

VIA Pico-ITX, a boutique item with a niche of its own

Considering the price of the VIA EPIA P-910 Pico-ITX mainboard against the $49 you can spend on a VIA APC or a mid-range cost of a Mini-ITX board, where does the Pico-ITX fit in? TechRepublic thinks there is a niche there that it fulfils:

"If you are truly limited in space for a traditional computer and are looking for a system that can mount behind a desktop monitor or are building Windows-powered kiosks, and in-car PCs, the EPIA-P910 might be worth taking a look at, despite the high price. Because VIA doesn’t have the market penetration that Intel or AMD has with their x86/x64 products, the company tries these interesting form factors as a way to carve out a market for itself with boutique items."

The VX11H debuts quietly

Blink and you will have missed the new VIA chip on the EPIA M-920 released last month. The new chip features on VIA's latest Mini-ITX board, but it didn't garner its own Press Release. Let's take a look at the new chip.

Oh, wait, that's kind of hard to do since the chip doesn't even have a page to itself on VIA's website.

The VX11H is presumably an upgrade from the VX11, which is a media system processor with DirectX11 capability. The key features of the VX11 are:

  • High Performance Hardware HD Video Decoder: Smooth hardware acceleration for MPEG-4, H.264, MPEG-2, and VC-1 for advanced browser streamed video technologies
  • Advanced Display Connectivity: Supports the latest display standards including DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI and VGA in multi-display configurations
  • DX11 Graphics Performance: The VIA Chrome 640/645 integrated graphics processor is fully DirectX 11 certified and includes a 128-bit 2D engine
  • SuperSpeed USB Certification: Has received SuperSpeed USB certification form the USB-IF and supports up to 3 USB 3.0 ports
  • HD Audio support: VIA Vinyl HD Audio controller supports up to eight high definition channels with a 192kHz sampling rate, delivering a richer all-round digital media experience
  • Memory Support: Memory controller technology supports the lower power, high-bandwidth DDR3 memory modules with speeds up to 1600MHz
  • Fully Integrated technology support: Supports the low power device interfaces of SDIO 3.0, UART, SPI, LPC as well as six USB 2.0 ports
It's not clear what the difference is between the VX11 and the VX11H.

VIA based HP thin client "intuitive"

The HP t510 is set up to be an umanaged thin client .... so reliable that it doesn't need to be maintained.
Featuring a "duo-core VIA Eden 1Ghz processor, 2GB memory, Via ChromotionHD 2.0 graphics adapter, gigabit LAN and optional 802.11/a/b/g/n WiFi adapter" it takes only 22 seconds to boot and 2 to shut down.

"Overall the HP Smart Zero operating system looks very good, its intuitive and well designed. Being “HDX Ready” and capable of client-side rendering of multimedia content makes it an interesting thin client. The out-of-the-box experience (OOBE) is very good and is similar to what the unmanaged HP Zero Clients can expect." - Source

DIY computer enthusiasts will flock to APC

When VIA's $49 APC went on sale for pre-orders, it sold out in less than 24 hours. Indicating that supply is not that far away, VIA have launched technical documentation and a forum where hobbyists and developers can discuss their APC projects.

This is like a tailor-made computing DIY platform. VIA is not new to this game, with the Mini-ITX having been adopted by case modders as the platform of choice some 10 years ago. Perhaps by setting up their own forum and website, VIA hopes to retain the development to their own site, and I must say, they have done a cracking job on their presentation and the enthusiast language used.

Here's what has been added to the APC Library:

VIA's Android trend continues with display system

VIA's APC, the $49 little pocket rocket which sold out last week, was the company's first foray into the Android space. Now they're taking the OS to a new segment with the VIA ARM DS, an all-in-one display system.

The ARM Cortex A9 SoC system is 18cm x 12cm x 2.5cm and it's adaptable for use as kiosks, POS systems, video walls, and menu boards to TVOIP, cloud streaming, and Out of Home Advertising. Like many of VIA's products it's set up as a development kit, with software development and support being provided by VIA. That makes it highly customisable.

Get your APC now ... oh no wait, they're sold out!

I got an email the other day from VIA announcing that pre-orders are now being accepted for their pocket rocket "bicycle for your mind" $49 Android PC (APC). I was a little busy with other things, thought I'd blog about that later this week and so today I followed the link and low and behold, all the pre-orders are sold out. It took less than 24 hours. Very impressive indeed.

I wonder when round two of sales will be?

VIA merges Android with a tiny motherboard or a $49 package

Most of what the average person does on a computer doesn't require a lot of computing power and doesn't require a desktop level operating system with full-blown software. General web surfing, social media, email, basic desktop publishing and blogging can all be handled by apps. Android is a free app-based operating system that is most often found on mobile phones, but also the occasional tablet. It has been tried on netbooks too, but now VIA is bundling it up with an ARM-based motherboard, measuring just 17cm x 8.5cm. The $49 motherboard with built in Flash storage and RAM just requires a monitor (or TV), keyboard and mouse to set up a fully functional Android PC. The USB ports mean that additional external storage can be added easily.

This setup is ideal for lounge room PCs, kids PCs, a PC for the kitchen bench top, etc and is also ripe for development into kiosks, car PCs and other applications.

"Powered by a WonderMedia ARM processor, APC integrates memory, storage, and a full set of consumer I/O features in a small footprint Neo-ITX motherboard that can be connected to a TV or monitor. The system also features a custom build of Android that has been optimized for keyboard and mouse input, and comes with a browser and a selection of preinstalled apps."

A living legend of Mini-ITX PC modding

Jeffrey Stephenson is a named you have probably come across over the years if you find yourself reading news about VIA, about small form factor PCs or about case modding. Jeffrey's designs don't involve a fun but crude gutting of an old appliance, they are carefully planned and meticulously executed masterpieces.

Jeffrey and his work have been honoured in an article in SiliconValleyWatcher. His passion for modding began with a VIA Mini-IT board:

"Stephenson bought one of the first mini-ITX form factor motherboards by VIA Technologies in 2003. He liked the idea of having a small, high performing computer. He had trouble finding a case that wasn't expensive or boring. "Then I stumbled across a site that sold wooden desktop cigar humidors, which had perfect dimensions and a stylish exterior," he said."

VIA still leading the embedded field

VIA invented the Mini-ITX platform ten years ago and it's now used by Intel and AMD as well to offer fully featured boards to embedded developers. VIA is still leading the way though, launching the world's first quad core Pico-ITX boards last Friday.

The VIA EPIA M900 and M910 feature the VIA 1.2GHz QuadCore E-series processor.

"The VIA QuadCore E-Series processor features a highly optimized, energy efficient multi-core architecture, which is natively 64-bit compatible and comes with a host of additional performance features including Adaptive Overclocking. To meet the low power demands of the embedded market, the VIA QuadCore E-Series processor offers industry-leading energy efficiency, with the VIA QuadCore E-Series 1.2+ GHz processor delivering a thermal design power (TDP) of only 27.5W. The distributed power of the VIA QuadCore E-Series processor makes it ideal for handling the most demanding HD video formats for immersive multi-display applications and environments."

By continuously improving the hardware offerings on embedded boards, VIA will ensure its longevity well past its first decade of innovative design.
